TL; DR
Gourmet Quest was my first Unity mobile game, as an intern at XIWEN games. It’s an adventure game about French culinary art, and I was the sole initial developer before becoming Lead Developer of a team of 4.
About the game
This 2013 mobile game was the Professor Layton of French culinary art. It was all about moving to different cities and investigating the doings of the Insipids, an evil organization trying to destroy french Cuisine, following an original idea from XIWEN games founders, which became my employers.
Unfortunately, after 2 years of development, the game, targeting a very specific niche, did not meet significant success and the company closed, and its Android Play and App Store pages closed.
My work on the game
I was the first developer on the project, and this was my first Unity and CSharp game.
The dev team varied after that, going up to 4 developers at the busiest time, which I managed as the Lead Developer.
I worked on all tech aspects of the game :
- Quiz mode
- Multiplayer quiz (online, including a high-performance C++ scalable and modular game server using ZeroMQ and a MongoDB database)
- Avatar customization
- Adventure mode with 2D side-scrolling city exploration
- Dialogue and animation System
- Some of the various mini-games
- Optimization for low-end devices like iPad 3
Unfortunately, you can’t play the game any more, since it was removed from the stores, but you can imagine and given the fact that it is now retro, that you probably don’t belong to that specific niche, and that it was a first game, it’s probably for the best.
I still cherish the memory of this experience though!
